When it comes to your web-site, additional attention ought to be paid to every minute detail to make sure it performs optimally to serve its purpose. Here are seven important rules of thumb to observe to make sure your web-site performs well.

Do not use splash pages
Splash pages are the first pages you see when you arrive at an online site. They normally have a pretty picture with words like “welcome” or “click here to enter”. In fact, they are that — vases with no actual purpose. Do not let your visitors have a reason to click on the “back” button! Give them the worth of your site up front without the splash page.

Do not use excessive banner adverts
Even the least net savvy people have trained themselves to ignore banner adverts so you will be wasting valuable web-site actual estate. In lieu, provide more valueable content and weave relevant affiliate links in to your content, and let your visitors feel that they require to buy in lieu of being pushed to buy.

Have a simple and clear navigation
You require to provide a simple and straightforward navigation menu so that even a young infant will know how to make use of it. Stay away from complicated Flash based menus or multi-tiered dropdown menus. If your visitors don’t know how to navigate, they will leave your site.

Have a clear indication of where the user is
When visitors are deeply engrossed in browsing your site, you will require to make sure they know which part of the site they are in at that moment. That way, they are going to be able to browse relevant information or navigate to any section of the site basically. Don’t confuse your visitors because confusion means “abandon ship”!

Avoid using audio on your site
If your visitor is going to stay a long time at your site, reading your content, you will require to make sure they are not irritated by some audio looping on and on on your web-site. In case you insist on adding audio, make sure they have some control over it — volume or muting controls would work fine.

You wan’t to have the right blend of artisticness and usability. You don’t want to annoy your visitors with overly vibrant, eye straining colors, but you bore your users either. There is a lot of information published on the web to help you discover the perfect vbulletin styles. Do your research before making a decision you might regret!

All sites are nice and profitable in their own way, however without a good target audience they are nothing. So for example if you’re running a marketing blog it would obviously be a waste of time getting traffic from unrelated niches, so don’t waste your time getting crap traffic to your site as it will only hurt your serps. (search engine ranking positions)

To start off I recommend using what I like to call the B.A.S.E tactics…

B- Blog posting
Find a good relevant list of blogs online that are in relation to your niche…

Here are some recommended search terms for a Marketing Blog:
> SEO Marketing Blogs
> Webmaster Blogs
> Marketing Blogs
> Promotion Blogs
etc…

Now take those key phrases and every 2-3 days do a search on each one in the bigger search engines like Google, Yahoo, MSN, etc.. and post your comments about the blogs. (about the blog NOT your site; don’t spam!) While doing so enter your anchor text (example: Marketing Blog) In the comment name field then enter your sites url & comment. I recommend changing up the keywords you use. Most all blogs will accept your comment if not automatically accepted as long as you stay on topic with the blog in your actual comment. Doing this every couple days will benefit your site very well.

A- Article & Directory Submission
Create a couple unique articles packed with good content relevant to your niche. If you’re not a writer you can outsource this to freelancers for a decent rate via means of freelance sites, forums, websites, etc.. now when the article is complete you will want to have a link to your site in it, I personally choose the keyword/key phrase (anchor text) I’m targeting for seo. From here choose a couple good article directories that have targeted traffic for your particular niche and submit your articles to them. (in NICHE categories!).

S- Social Bookmarking & Social Networks
Promoting your website via means of Social Networks and Social bookmarking sites are a great source of targeted traffic to promote your website and in most cases they are free unless of course you decide to purchase paid promotion packages. Either way (manual or automatic) they work and I recommend submitting your website to social bookmarking sites and spreading the word of your sites on social networks.

E- Exchanging Links
Do a search on all the main search engines for websites similar to yours and send them a link exchange request email. I personally send an email request to all the top 10-30 website results per keyword I use. This usually gets me a few good sites to exchange links with.

NOTE: To make these tasks easier and faster you can use seo software’s like IPB and SEO Elite etc..

In short… I personally recommend keeping these pointers in mind when trying to achieve your goal. I hope this helps you in your online ventures as a profitable webmaster.
